The "Morgan Kingston" analogue receiver
(Slightly updated 2nd February 2004)
The search engine logs for the web site has shown considerable interest in the
"Morgan Kingston" receiver. The instructions supplied with it are reckoned to be
spectacularly poor, but here are simple instructions for setting the receiver up and
tuning in your channels.
This receiver is sold as a cheap, basic, but seemingly
well-built and competent analogue STB. It is often found in the Lidl supermarket chain. It
is reckoned to have good colour and adequate stereo sound, which is compatible with
Wegener Panda.
It has 999 channels - many of which are already pre-programmed for the various stations:
Ch. 01-68 Astra 1, 19.2
deg east
Ch. 70-94 Hotbirds, 13.0 deg east
and so on for various assorted Eutelsats, Arabsat 1C and 1DR, Turksat 1C, Eutelsat 2F2,
Telecom 2B, Gorizon 26, Intelsat K and 601, etc. throughout the range - assuming that
nothing has been shut down since the lists were generated.
To tune a particular channel - or change the tuning of one those already set up:
Press 'Set'. The display on the box will show E.1.X.X.
Use the +/- keys to select the E.1 to E.2. A.1 or A.2.
(These refer to various LNB switch positions - don't worry about these - you'll be able to
pick up stations in no matter what the settings).
now, press 'Set' again.
the box display will change to show the present frequency of the channel tuned, (if any).
Use the +/- keys to up/down the frequency - should run from around 700 or so up to
around 2200 or so. Keep doing this until you have got the channel/station you want - the
tuning goes through the whole band.
You can cycle through all the numbers in each of the four modes from E.1 through to A.2,
for whatever satellite you might care to point your dish at.
Once you've picked up a picture, you can then press the audio key and try 7.02 / 7.20 for
a stereo sound if the station supports it - or 6.50 for a mono sound. Check the correct
sound carriers for the channel of your choice on the appropriate pages on this web site.
If you want to store whatever you find, press the memory key to store - or if playing with
a station already working, just leave it and the setting will revert once the channel is
changed.
As for the dish: if you purchased from LiDL as a kit boxed together with the 80cm
satellite dish, then the rear of the box should have instructions for setting the thing
up.
If not - or if the instructions are badly printed and there's no paper insert inside the
manual you could try:
1. Attach the dish to a mount - even the simple bracket LiDL
sell alongside the box and dish - but make sure the dish mount-pole is vertical.
2. Ensure that the mount for the LNB, is coming out of the
lower dish rim.
3. Point the whole dish both to due south and with the front
face of the dish more or less vertical. Check the tuning pages
for suggestions on how to aim your dish. The rear, heavy plastic coated mount, of the dish
has some satellite elevation degree markings on each side, so adjust this to somewhere
between 20 - 25 degrees or so to begin with, you can fine tune it later.
