Madley Earth Station uplink pictures.

page corrected for factual error 28th Feb 2005

Many thanks to one of my email contacts for providing the pictures and the information on this page. He sent me these pictures taken at Madley Earth Station in Herefordshire, and the pictures are used with permission of BT plc.

There are at least 48 dishes on the site, ranging in size from 90cm, right up to 3 huge 32m dishes. One of the big dishes is shown in the second picture. Madley is one of several uplink stations in the UK, and is involved in many different types of information and data transmission, including some ISP transfers. Apart from normal tv uplinks the Madley dishes are also used to turn around a tv service in a double hop. For example, CNN is taken down off NSS 803 at 338 deg E, and bounced back up to Astra 1.

From left to right the dishes are 19, 17, and 18.

19 uplinks onto Thor 2 at 0.8 deg W for the Telenor company. 18 and 19 are Astra 1 uplinks, and are used for various services, including CNN International, Nickleodeon, Sky Sports 2, CNBC, and JSTV.

The big dish is 32m in diameter! It uplinks Indian Ocean services onto a satellite at 60E. Not strictly sky box analogue tv related, but I liked the picture -it shows a nice overview of part of the site with quite a few of the dishes on it. The tweo big dishes in the background are 19m Ku band antennas

Any errors in the information on this page are entirely my fault, and nothing to do with BT.
